(14 MINUTE READ) SQLite recently addressed a long-standing bug related to the Write Ahead Log (WAL) that could cause database corruption, present in the system for 16 years. The dqlite team investigated whether this bug affects their implementation by modeling SQLite's behavior in TLA+ and comparing it with how dqlite interacts with SQLite and concluded that dqlite is not affected due to its stricter locking mechanisms that prevent simultaneous writes and checkpoints. Signal Over Noise Vol 2, Issue 26 | Jul 03 2026 Tales from the Workbench
Signal Over Noise Vol 2, Issue 26 | Jul 03 2026 Tales from the Workbench Don’t have time to read this week’s issue? Why not copy/paste it into your AI agent and ask it for insights? Some weeks the newsletter is one idea worked all the way through when time affords it. This week it’s the other kind: a run of small tools, each one built to kill a single specific annoyance while I’ve been juggling my workload around being Dad Taxi. It’s been a week of non-stop interruptions and sweltering heat, but here’s what’s come from the workbench: New models on the block Two new models out from Anthropic: Sonnet 5 and Fable 5 (technically re-released — or can we say ‘out on good behaviour’?). I’m leaving both where they are for now. I gave Sonnet 5 a job running my morning-brief skill this week, which normally takes 5–10 minutes tops on Opus 4.8 — and it took a good deal longer. In fairness, my whole setup is tuned around Opus, so that’s the reminder that past a point the model isn’t the…

Cloud Security
I like the product screenshots, it seems like they gather app-relevant context thoughtfully. Cloud Security Some notes on Lambda MicroVMs Aidan Steele shares hands-on notes on AWS Lambda MicroVMs, a generalisation of Lambda functions that run code in a fresh VM for up to 8 hours. The shell side is a first-class capability since MicroVMs support PTYs natively with shell access through a dedicated AWS API, and inside the VM you can run Docker containers with full OS capabilities. Networking gets its own abstraction called a Lambda Network Connector, a configuration packaging subnets, security groups, and an IAM role for ENI management under its own ARN. The connectors create ENIs in your VPC but hide them by default unless a specific flag is set on the describe call, and AWS has placed resource-based policies on the ENIs so only the Lambda service can mutate them, closing off the old trick of attaching an elastic IP to a Lambda ENI for VPC-attached internet access. OpenCanadian Cyber in Context
Short Background on DND/CAF Digital Transformation
On June 30, Canada quietly released a Defence Digital Strategy titled "Mission Ready, Digital Driven." This is the highest-level document to date addressing the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) lack of digital modernization and the need to chart a path forward. In Canadian fashion, there was no official government launch or announcement of the strategy. At the moment, it is unclear whether this was a soft launch that will be followed by a larger announcement with additional details, or whether it is emblematic of the government’s regard for cyber and digital technologies. This new strategy makes strong statements about digital sovereignty and supports Canadian industry, so it is surprising that this has had such a muted launch. For today, you can read a review of why this Strategy is so important, especially for Canadian industry, and download the document at the bottom of this page. Thanks for reading Canadian Cyber in Context! This post is…

How User and Entity Behavior Analytics Spots Trouble Early
How User and Entity Behavior Analytics Spots Trouble Early Dr. Jason Edwards, DM, CISSP, CRISC Read this article on LinkedIn to join the conversation Read on LinkedIn If you have ever stared at a wall of alerts wondering which “medium” is about to become tomorrow’s incident, you have already felt the gap that User and Entity Behavior Analytics (UEBA) is meant to fill. In plain terms, UEBA is an analytics approach and supporting technology that learns what “normal” looks like for your users, service accounts, hosts, and other entities, then flags behavior that strays far outside those patterns. Instead of treating every login or network connection the same, it considers context like typical hours, locations, peer groups, and past behavior to surface the genuinely weird stuff. UEBA is not a single standalone tool category so much as an analytical layer that rides on top of the data you already collect. It usually sits close to your security information and event management platform,…

Field Note: Where You Keep the Final Say
Field Note: Where You Keep the Final Say I keep a tool wired into my AI setup that can read the actual text of Spanish law — the BOE, the official state gazette. In layperson terms it’s a connector (an “MCP server”) that lets the AI check a real and validated source, instead of answering from memory or confabulating / hallucinating. I built it and put it on GitHub, for exactly the kind of moment I hit this week: a question about a Spanish regulation where the answer matters and getting it wrong has a cost. So, while I was working through my regulation question, the AI could have asked the BOE tool straight away and settled it in one go, but it didn’t. Instead, it reached for what it already “knew” and gave me a confident answer from memory. The official source was sitting right there, one query away, and it strolled past it down Las Ramblas. I’d built the thing for this exact moment and then watched it get ignored. So when I double-checked the real source, the confident answer it…
